Main responsibilities of Cockermouth Town Council

  • Allotments – We manage and let over 80 allotments on two sites within Cockermouth at The Gote and on St. Helens Street.

  • War Memorial situated on Station Road (and the Council organise the annual remembrance Service each November).

  • A monument on Main Street called the Mayo Monument which commemorates a former Member of Parliament for the Town who was once the Viceroy of India.

  • The Memorial Gardens which we maintain as public open space, a riverside walk on the banks of the Cocker stretches from from Gote Bridge up past the 11th Century Castle.

  • Playgrounds – Our main playground is situated in the Memorial Gardens, the Town Council also maintains four smaller play area on Isel Road, Greyrigg Avenue, Harris Park Extension and Towers Lane.

  • Tarn Close Sports Ground – We own and currently lease to Cockermouth Junior Football Club.

  • Cockermouth Live!  We support Cockermouth Live Festival.

  • Taste Cumbria / Taste Christmas – We support both Taste events in the town.

  • Annual Firework Display – We organise an annual firework display which is held on the Sunday nearest the 5th November in the Memorial Gardens.

  • Victoria Hall – We currently lease out ‘The Vicky,’ which is being used as a shared hotdesking workspace.

  • Fishing Rights on Town Waters on the River Derwent and River Cocker, permits are available from the Town Hall.

  • Public Clock – We maintain the public clock on Main Street.

  • Flower Baskets/Planters – We provide floral displays in the hanging baskets and planters around Cockermouth.

  • Bus Shelters – We maintain two bus shelters on Main Street.

  • Community Defibrillator– We maintain the community defibrillator in Kings Arms Lane.

  • Public Toilets – We maintain 4 public toilets in the town.

  • Weddings – We offer room hire of the Council Chamber for Civil Ceremonies.

  • Twinning – Cockermouth has a very active twinning arrangement with Marvejols in Southern France since 1983.  In 2000 we were jointly awarded the very prestigious Europe Prize by the Council of Europe.
